Professor James Thorp passed away on May 2, 2018 in Blacksburg, Virginia, USA.

He was born on February 7, 1937 in Kansas City, Missouri, USA. He received his Bachelor?s, Master?s, and Ph. D. degrees from Cornell University. He stayed there as a faculty member, eventually rising to the position of Director of the School of Electrical Engineering and later becoming the head of the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech.
He was a principal contributor to the development of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs). He became a Fellow of IEEE in 1989, a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 1996, and he jointly received the Franklin Medal in Electrical Engineering in 2008.  James Thorp was the PAC World Guru in the March 2014 issue.
