Impact of IEC 61850 on Bus Protection
The industry is going through significant changes due to the increased requirements for improved quality of power supplied by the utility in order to avoid wide area disturbances or costly interruptions of manufacturing or other processes caused by voltage sags, swells or unbalanced conditions when a short circuit fault occurs in the distribution system. IEC 61850 defined two types of peer-to-peer communications based on GOOSE and sampled values messages that allow the development and implementation of protection schemes that can significantly improve the flexibility and efficiency of bus protection.
