This article shall highlight the state of the art in testing transformer differential protection systems.
Tripping a power transformer due to a fault is always a critical situation for an electricity grid. Therefore a trip should only occur if it is absolutely inevitable. Not instantaneously and selectively tripping a faulty transformer also is a situation that must be avoided. Assuring the correct action of protection systems is why testing is so important. Proper testing is required to finally check the proper planning, installation, setting and configuration of a reliable protection system.
