Wind Integration

Designing a Wind Generation Integration Substation with IEC 61850 GOOSE

By Michael J. Thompson, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc.

Rapid growth of renewable energy sources, especially in the western Great Plains, has caused utilities in the area to make major upgrades to the transmission system in order to integrate distributed energy resources to the grid. This wind integration substation project is an addition to the grid. The substation, located at approximately the midpoint of a 345 kV line connecting a generating station to a major transmission hub substation, includes two line terminals.   More
