3rd Annual Canada Protection Symposium

The event took place at The Westin Harbour Castle hotel in Toronto, Canada, 4-6 December 2018. The conference was preceded by an IEC 61850 half-day tutorial followed in the afternoon by a technical tour at the G&W Canada facility in Brampton, Ontario. The demonstrations of different Smart Grid related technologies were a good prelude to the symposium.
The opening of the event was followed by a keynote presentation from Max Cananzi from Alectra Utilities Corporation.

The symposium was organized as usual with no parallel sessions. The speakers from utilities, manufacturers, and service providers presented the latest topics in protection, automation, and control. Each presentation was followed by discussions. The topics can be summarized in the following categories:

  • IEC 61850 and its applications to substation and system protection
  • Advanced methods and tools for protection IEDs and systems testing
  • New trends and technologies in distribution automation
  • Microgrids and Smart Grid technologies
  • Power Utility Communication

The first day ended with a reception and dinner, which allowed the participants to relax and enjoy meeting old and new friends. The second day included also a panel discussion on “The here and now - grid resiliency." This gave an opportunity to the participants to have a lively discussion on this topic of interest with top level industry experts.
