Experience from Statnett R&D Digital Substation Project

Statnett started the R&D Digital Substation pilot project in 2016. The Digital Substation pilot should investigate the use of IEC 61850 9-2 process bus in a Digital Substation Automation and Protection System (DSAS). Statnett wanted to become more familiar with the technology and investigate what benefits this technique offered for future substation projects. Further objective of the Digital Substation pilot was to challenge some traditional Substation Automation and Protection System (SAS) design principles and investigate if such new ideas were feasible, and manageable from an operational point of view.  The system integrator in the Digital Substation pilot was Jacobsen Elektro, which has cooperation with Sprecher Automation, while the other vendors involved were Arteche, Siemens, ABB, Cisco, Omicron, Meinberg and Landis & Gyr.
