WASA and the Roadmap to WAMPAC at SDG&E

by Eric A. Udren, Dr. Damir Novosel, Dan Brancaccio, Quanta Technology, USA, and Tariq Rahman, SDG&E, USA

The utility industry was initially slow to grasp the potential of synchrophasor measurements and concepts since they were first presented by Phadke, Thorp, and Adamiak in 1983. However, in the last decade, there is rapidly growing industry activity in and appreciation of the potential uses for synchrophasors and the Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) which compute streams of these values from voltage and current measurements at power system nodes and branches in substations. Industry forums such as the North American Synchrophasor Initiative (NASPI) are continuously developing new application concepts and guidance as a growing list of utilities deploy PMUs along with client systems to help utilities observe and utilize the measurement streams.
