Automatic System for the Control of Stability of an HVDC link - Implementation in Red Eléctrica de España (REE)

Majority of HVDC transmission systems are Line Commutated Converter (LCC), and they are subject to some limitations in its operation. One of the most important limitation is to assure a minimum short circuit power in the AC busbar where the HVDC link is connected, otherwise, electrical system could become unstable, with the consequences to service and users. This constrain imposes several operating procedures, limiting the optimization because it is needed to work with high margins and high availability of all assets. Automated Stability Phasor-based Algorithm System (ASPAS) allows optimization of the operation with the consequent economic benefit. More
