Biographical Sketch

Demetrios Tziouvaras was born in Monahiti,Grevena, Greece. He holds a MastersDegree in Electrical Engineering fromSanta Clara University, California, USA.From 1980 to 1998 he worked for PacificGas and Electric Co., where he heldvarious positions in the System ProtectionDepartment including Principal ProtectionEngineer responsible for protectiondesign standards, application of newtechnologies, substation automation,relay settings, and analysis of relay operationsand system disturbances. He joinedthe Research Engineering Departmentof Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories,Inc. in 1998 where he is involved in digitalrelay algorithm development and electromagnetictransient simulations.

Mr. Tziouvaras is a senior IEEE member andmember of the Power System RelayingCommittee. He is a member of CIGREand the convenor of CIGRE SC B5.15 on"Modern Distance Protection Functionsand Applications."He is the author of more than 35 IEEEand Protective Relay Conference papers,holds three patents in the area of powersystem protection and has more pending.He has taught seminars in Protective Relaying,Digital Relaying, and EMTP at theUniversity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,the California Polytechnic Institute in SanLuis Obispo, IEEE PES, and elsewhere. Heserved as the chairman of an IEEE PSRCworking group that developed an IEEE PEStutorial on "EMTP Applications to PowerSystem Protection"
