After a final vote from the membership of the IEEE Power Engineering Society (PES), it has officially changed its name to the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES), effective 22 April, 2008. IEEE PES
President Wanda Reder made the announcement at the 2008 IEEE PES Transmission and Distribution Conference in Chicago, Illinois. The change is driven by the efforts of the Society to grow its worldwide membership and provide leadership and guidance for areas of significant societal concern - the dynamic changes in power and energy industries, an energy-intensive global economy and a "green-conscious" society that are reflected in the name change. As stated on the IEEE Power & Energy Society's website www.ieee.org/portal/site/pes/ it is "...a worldwide, non-profit association of more than 21,000 individuals engaged in electric power engineering. PES members are involved in the planning, research, development, construction, installation, and operation of equipment and systems for the safe, reliable, and economic generation, transmission, distribution, measurement, and control of electric energy. The Power & Energy Society provides the world's largest forum for sharing the latest in technological developments in the electric power industry, for developing standards that guide the development and construction of equipment and systems, and for educating members of the industry and the general public. Members of the Power & Energy Society are leaders in this field, and they - and their employers - derive substantial benefits from involvement with this unique and outstanding association."
