ISGT 2012 - Innovative Smart Grid Technologies, USA

ISGT 2012 took place from 16 to 20 January in Washington, DC.

The third IEEE PES Conference on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT 2012) was sponsored by the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) and co-sponsored by the IEEE's Industry Applications Society, Signal Processing Society and Antennas and Propagations Society.

The event was one of several similar conferences held at different continents serving as a forum for discussing the challenges of the transition to smart grids, as well as the state-of-the-art innovations in smart grid technologies. The conference was organized using several different formats for presentations and discussions of issues and ideas. The papers accepted by the technical committee were presented in three plenary sessions, twenty three panel sessions, one poster session and thirty two technical papers sessions and covered a wide range of topics:

  •  Impact of Smart Grid on Distributed Energy Resources (electric cars, demand response, distributed generation, storage)

  •  Smart Sensors and Advanced Metering Infrastructure

  •  Cyber Security Systems (intelligent monitoring and outage management)

  •  Wide Area Protection, Communication, and Control in Energy Systems

  •  Power and Energy System Applications

  •  Energy Management Systems (with applications to smart buildings and home automation)

  •  Smart Grid devices and Standards

The conference was preceded by three tutorials on Monday, introducing smart substation technologies and advanced DA/DMS applications in smart grid, as well as the emerging challenges and opportunities for power system operation and trading under smart grid. Two additional tutorials on the design of the role of Microgrids and Cyber security for smart grids were available after the conference on Friday.

The social program included a pre-conference networking and reception, a poster session and reception, and the Wednesday evening gala dinner.
