CIGRE SC B5 Colloquium 2019

The CIGRE Study Committee B5 (Protection and Automation) colloquium was held in Tromso, Norway, 24–28 June 2019.

This was the first CIGRE B5 event within the Arctic Circle. Clarion Hotel the Edge in Tromsø was chosen as the venue for both the Study Committee annual meeting and the Colloquium.  The Colloquium was preceded by different CIGRE SC B5 WG and advisory group meetings, and two tutorials on Impact of geomagnetic storms on protection and Precision Time Protocol (PTP). The main focus of the conference was the discussion sessions focused on the three preferential subjects:

  • PS1 - Leveraging PMU data for better Protection, Automation and Control systems
  • PS2 - Time in Protection Applications - Time sources and distribution Methods
  • PS3 - Future technologies for inter - substation communication


The conference program also included a poster session with direct discussions. Each preferential subject session started by a special report providing an overview of the submitted papers which was followed by prepared and spontaneous contributions by participants in the colloquium. The colloquium was followed by the CIGRE Study Committee B5 annual meeting.
The social program included a welcome cocktail, the Colloquium barbecue dinner at Sommarøy (an island trying to establish itself as a time-free zone due to the lack a darkness at this time of the year) and the CIGRE B5 dinner.
