CIGRE B5 Colloquium 2011, Lausanne, Switzerland

The program included technical and social events that provided many opportunities for the participants to present the results from their work and discuss issues important to our industry. Several CIGRE SC B5 working groups also held meetings on Monday and Tuesday morning.
A tutorial focused on the transition of IEC 61850 towards Edition 2 was held Tuesday afternoon and included four presentations by leading industry experts:

  • Refreshing the basics of IEC 61850, Klaus-Peter Brand, Switzerland
  • Important findings on IEC 61850 from CIGRE works, Volker Leitloff,  France
  • Redundancy and high-precision time synchronization, Clemens Hoga, Germany
  • Extended user benefits with IEC 61850 Edition2, Christoph Brunner, Switzerland

The colloquium started with a keynote address on "Energy storage enabling renewable resources," presented by Dr. Hans Püttgen, Professor and Director at the Energy Center of EPFL. Many authors were given the opportunity to display their work in the poster session, and discuss details with the visitors.

The main focus of the conference, were the sessions on the three preferential subjects:

  • IEC 61850: Which tools for which user, Special Reporter Andres Johnsson, Sweden
  • Protection of hybrid line/cable circuits, Special Reporter Luc Uyttersprot, Belgium
  • Performance of protection systems whilst the network is under stress, Special Reporter Raul Sollero, Brazil

Each special report was followed by prepared and spontaneous contributions by participants in the colloquium.
A Post Event Technical Visit took the participants to CERN in Geneva, the famous European Organization for Nuclear Research.
