5th Protection, Automation & Control World Americas Conference

The PAC World Americas Conference 2018 was held 21-23 August 2018, in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA.

The Fifth annual PACWAC was held at the Raleigh Convention Center, Raleigh, USA.

The opening of the conference was followed by the Keynote address "Driving Grid Resilience”, presented by Michael Pesin, Deputy Assistant Secretary, U.S. Department of Energy, Advanced Grid Research & Development.

The two-and-a-half days conference program included more than 50 papers presented in single sessions and covering a wide range of topics.

As is a tradition for all PAC World conferences - there were no parallel sessions. The authors of the papers were mostly from North America, but there were also from Europe, Asia, Australia and the Middle East.

The papers were presented in the paper sessions including 15 min presentations followed by a discussion of all the papers at the end of each session.

The papers covered a wide range of topics related to the developments in electric power systems protection and control technologies, implementation of IEC 61850, the challenges that the protection, automation and control industry is facing due to the impact of distributed energy resources (DERs) with inverter-based interfaces on protection and control systems, cyber security and many others.

The traditional “Ask the experts” panel was the last session in the conference program. The interactive discussion gave an opportunity to the participants to address a wide range of questions submitted in advance or raised during the session.

During the breaks the participants visited the exhibition and discussed with the vendors’ representatives the latest technology and its applications.

As has already become a tradition, at the end of the conference program on Tuesday there was a demo session when participating exhibitors had an extended interaction with participants in a relaxed atmosphere.

The social program of the conference included the Welcome reception on Monday evening at La Stella Pizza in Raleigh.

The gala dinner took place at the North Carolina Museum of History, which offered a unique environment and an excellent menu. This was followed by the photo competition awards ceremony and great entertainment by a superb  group of folk musicians.
