Protection, automation and control in the era of the Smart Grid is changing quickly from the individual electromechanical relays protecting the components of the electric power system to complex systems of multifunctional intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) working together by exchanging high-speed peer-to-peer communications messages. This requires a different approach to ensure the quality of such systems at every stage of their lifecycle.
The book “Verification, Validation, and Testing of Engineered Systems” is a resource that can help the specialists in our industry to gain from the experience of other domains and improve the quality assurance process.
The author of the book is Dr. Avner Engel who holds his PhD from the Industrial Engineering Department of Tel-Aviv University.

For the past twenty years, he has worked for Israel Aerospace Industries, where he has managed large software projects. Dr. Engel was involved with several research projects funded by the European Commission. He is currently teaching systems engineering courses at the Holon Institute of Technology in Holon, Israel. This background gives him the detailed knowledge of the subject of the book, combined with the experience of explaining it in an understandable way to a wide audience.
The material is presented in close to 800 pages and divided in three parts.

The introduction to Verification, Validation, and Testing (VVT) concepts is presented in the only chapter of Part I.  It analyzes the role of VVT in  the process of engineered   systems   throughout their lifecycle and the link between systems development, manufacturing, use and maintenance and their VVT.

The second part of the book includes four chapters and can be considered as a reference guide, describing a number of methods that can be used to perform 40 systems' development VVT activities (Chapter-2) and 27 systems' post development   activities (Chapter-3).  Seventeen non-testing systems' VVT methods are described in Chapter 4 and 33 testing systems' methods are presented in Chapter 5.

The third part of the book includes three chapters. Chapter-6 describes the modeling of the quality cost, time and risk of systems.  Chapter 7 introduces methods for acquiring quality data and optimization of the VVT strategy.  The last chapter of the book presents the methodology used to validate the   quality   model and examples   of a system’s quality improvements. 
The material in the book includes in-text citations that are provided usually in the theoretical sections of the book to point the reader to sources for further reading.
Even though the book is not focused to the testing of electric power systems protection and control, it contains a lot of useful information that can help the specialists from our industry to develop and implement a well-structured approach to testing, which will improve the reliability and security of the Smart Grid.
