Nirmal Kumar Nair

Nirmal Kumar Nair received his BE in EE from M.S. University, Baroda, and ME in High Voltage Engineering (Gold Medal) from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He has a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University, College Station, USA. He has held several research and teaching positions in India, USA and New Zealand. Currently, he is an Associate Professor at the University of Auckland engaging with generators, distributors/metering, retailers, transmission system operator, regulators, vendors and engineering associations through consultancy and PES/CIGRE activities. His project focus is integration of distributed renewable resources emphasizing on protection, economics, innovation and resilience. He serves in various capacities for IEEE PES. Currently he is secretary for CIGRE New Zealand and represents CIGRE B5: Protection & Automation.

He is passionate about life-long-learning, energy policy, innovation and energy media outreach. He is cultivating a taste for the outdoors and personal well-being.

Vijay Muthukrishnan

Vijay is currently working as R&D Director at GE Grid Automation. Vijay has 19 years of experience in the Industry ranging from being a protection engineer doing commissioning of substations, to being technical advisor for large scale power generating stations responsible for end to end Electrical systems installation and commissioning, to being protection relay algorithms designer, and leading advanced technology development. Working in GE since 2001, he has led global team initiatives within GE.  Vijay has global experience having worked in more than 20 countries in power stations and electrical substation projects.

Vijay is a passionate leader and loves to mentor and develop young engineers. A long-time practitioner of yoga, meditation and mindfulness, he enjoys teaching these techniques to promote awareness about overall wellness and work life balance. In his spare time, he enjoys being with his daughter and read biographies.


Wayne Hartmann

Wayne Hartmann, IEEE Senior Member, is VP of Smart Grid and Protection for Beckwith Electric.  He provides customer and industry linkage to Beckwith Electric’s solutions, as well as contributing expertise for application engineering, training and product development. Before joining Beckwith Electric, Wayne performed in application, sales and marketing management capacities with PowerSecure, General Electric, Siemens Power T&D and Alstom T&D. Wayne is very active in the IEEE serving as a Main Committee Member of the IEEE PSRC for 25 years. He is presently Chair of the WG “Investigation of the Criteria for the Transfer of Motor Buses.” His IEEE tenure includes having chaired the Rotating Machinery Protection Subcommittee (2007-2010), contributing to numerous standards, guides, transactions, reports and tutorials, and teaching at the T&D Conference and various local PES and IAS chapters. He has authored and presented many papers and contributed to McGraw-Hill's 2nd edition of the Standard Handbook of Power Plant Engineering.  

Wayne has been playing guitar since his teens. By 20 years old, he was in a three piece band playing out live and recording. He credits his wife Lisa with supporting his “guitar habit” and declaring the 2nd floor of their house “Wayne’s World,” complete with his recording studio and guitars.

Michael Albert

Michael Albert was born in 1971 in Saarlouis, Germany, a small town close to the border of France. He graduated in 1998 at the “Universitat des Saarlandes.” After doing some research studies in the field of earth fault location and line differential protection, he joined OMICRON electronics GmbH, Germany in January 2005 as a projection engineer. Currently he is working as product manager and is also responsible for some parts of the engineering services.

Michael loves sports and in his spare time he plays quite often sport’s games.  His two daughters 9 and 11 are following in his footsteps.
