Automated Testing of Motor Protection IEDs

In the pre-digital times the setup of protection devices was done with only a small number of parameters. These parameters could be easily tested and the results were reported by hand. During the last 50 years there has been a tremendous development in the field of microelectronics which found its way in our everyday life. And of course, it also found its way in the assets of our power grids and finally into the protection devices. One of the consequences is shown in Figure 2. The number of parameters in electromechanical or static protection relays were limited, so that it was possible to test them all. The first generation of digital devices had some more parameters, but it was still possible to check every parameter during commissioning or in a routine test. More
