In the last issue the history of interfaces for protection and control was covered. It finished with the the IEC 60870-5-103 standard, which was serial communication with 9600 or 19200 Baud. This article covers the introduction of Ethernet into the substation, resulting in the famous IEC 61850 series. We are aware that this is a huge task to describe this development. A lot of the people involved are still active in the industry. The article is based on material collected, and interviews with the experts. If we forgot something please let us know to be considered in the second part or a later issue. Thank you for your understanding, dear reader. More
