Traditional impedance based fault location has been for a long time subject to many papers with different improvements trying to eliminate uncontrollable variables that have influence in the accuracy of impedance methods. The increasing use of renewable energy sources (RES) and the fact that they are located far from load centers resulting in long transmission lines, usually not parallel to roads that facilitate the dispatch of maintenance crews while doing repairs, is raising the issue about the importance of accurate fault location methods that can reduce outage times.
