The development of modern architectures for protection, control and energy management systems started with the introduction of microprocessors and serial communication protocols. It has since matured from purely hierarchical systems into partly distributed systems. Communication protocols like IEC 61850 offer multi-peer data connections, i.e. essentially fully free functional architectures with different protocol parts for variable real-time performance requirements, which dramatically enlarge the scope of system architectures.   More
