45th CIGRE Session 2014, Paris, France

The event was held in the Palais de Congres in Paris, France from 25 to 29 August 2014.

This is one of the key global events for our industry, which brings several thousand specialists from many countries and all continents around the world.  The conference program on Monday was dedicated to the General Assembly of CIGRE members. Tuesday to Friday the main events in the program were multiple study committees Discussion Meetings arranged in parallel sessions each day, running also in parallel with Poster Sessions.

The Technical Exhibition was at the same location and available to the delegates during the days of the session. It was impressive to see the number of applications demonstrated based on non-conventional sensors and IEC 61850 communications that are moving our industry towards the digital substations of the future which are becoming a reality today.

The discussions in Discussion Meetings were in the form of prepared contributions based on the questions raised by the Special Reporter for each preferential subject. The following Discussion Meetings covered topics of interest to the protection, automation and control community:

  • SC B5 Protection and Automation
  • SC C2 System Operation and Control
  • SC D2 Information Systems and Telecommunication

Two Preferential Subjects were covered in the presented Special Reports for B5:

  • PS1 - New protection and automation schemes based on enhanced communication possibilities
  • PS2 - Expectations from stakeholders about IEC61850

Governing bodies, study committees and some working groups also held private meetings during the session.

The main social event of the CIGRE Session was the Cocktail Reception which again was in the form of Private Visit of “Musée du Louvre.”
