PACWAC was held 12-13 November 2015 at the Gallagher Convention Center, Johannesburg, South Africa.

After the success of the first PAC World Africa conference in Cape Town, South Africa in August 2013, Johannesburg, South Africa became the home of the second PAC World Africa conference.

The two day conference program included 31 papers presented in four single sessions and covering a wide range of topics. The papers presenters were a mix of manufacturers and utilities representative focusing on issues of interest such as:

  • Synchrophasors and their applications for wide area monitoring and control
  • Digital substations based on the IEC 61850 standard
  • Testing of multifunctional devices and protection and control systems
  • Communication systems for power utility communications
  • Advanced methods for protection and analysis

Encouraging was the significant number of utility engineers that have authored, or co-authored papers on the above listed and other topics.  Each paper session finished with discussions which allowed the participants in the conference to focus on some specific issues that they found particularly relevant to their work.

During the breaks the participants visited the exhibition and discussed the latest technology and its applications with the representatives of leading suppliers in the field of electric power systems protection and control.

The social program included a Welcome reception the evening preceding the conference, and the Gala Dinner, which was held at theMidrand Conference Center. The latter is situated across the road from Gallagher Convention Center and between the largest business hubs (Pretoria & Johannesburg) in Gauteng. The awards for the traditional photo contest (General and Power categories) were presented during thedinner (you can see the winning pictures on page 90 in this issue). The evening finished with an entertaining interactive magic show.
