IEEE PES 2012 General Meeting

San Diego, USA

The event was held 22-26 July at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego, California, USA.

The 2012 Power & Energy Society GM is a gathering of thousands of electric  power systems professionals from all corners of the world that come together to discuss the issues that our industry needs to address under the very appropriate motto “New energy horizons - opportunities and challenges”.

The goal of the organizers was “to provide an international forum for experts to promote, share, and discuss various issues and developments in the field of electrical power engineering”, achieved through a program that included a wide variety of events. Topics of interest to the PAC specialist were included in many of these events.

The Sunday Welcome reception was held on the flight deck of the USS Midway aircraft carrier.
During the PES Members Meeting the President of the society Noel Schulz provided an update about PES progress and activities, which was followed by a Plenary session focused on the main theme of the conference. Many IEEE PES technical committees held their annual meetings, scheduled from Monday through Thursday.

The program of the conference included multiple parallel sessions and other events. The following types of sessions were included in the program:

  • The Super Sessions included  presentations in composite sessions designed to fully explore topics from different perspectives. Experts from several PES technical committees addressed subjects that are of significant interest to the PAC profession
  • Papers were presented at Panel and Paper sessions, as well as at the recently introduced Paper Forums
  • A Monday evening Poster Session attracted hundreds of authors that presented all aspects of the industry, based on a poster version of the papers. A Student Poster Contest was co-located with the Poster Session. At the same time participants had an opportunity to stop in and congratulate the IEEE Fellows elected to the class of 2012 who are members of PES, during the reception held in their honor
  • Wednesday evening attendees participated in an informal reception hosted by PES and IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Committee, held to encourage networking between industry, government and university participants.

Full-day and one half-day tutorials were another option for the participants to expand their knowledge.
