PAC World Conference, 2012

The third annual PAC World conference was held in Budapest, Hungary from 25 to 28 June 2012.

After the success of the first two PAC World conferences in Dublin, Ireland, the third conference was held for the first time in a different country - in the beautiful capital of Hungary. The idea behind it was to get closer to members of our community from Central and Eastern Europe, while at the same time maintaining the global appeal of the event.

The conference venue was Obuda University in the Buda side of Budapest.  The conference was attended by more than two hundred protection, automation and control specialists from utilities, suppliers, consultants and academia from 38 countries and all continents.

The conference was preceded on Monday by a half-day tutorial on "Hard Wired or Communications Based Systems – Which One is Better?" presented by Dr. Alexander Apostolov (USA).
The registration and tutorial on Monday were followed by the welcome reception that was held in Obuda University’s Conference Center Aula.

The conference opening Tuesday morning was followed by the keynote presentation.
Zoltán Tihanyi from MAVIR Hungarian Transmission System Operator Company, Hungary talked about “Smart Pace - Fast Development of Protection, Automation and Control in Electricity”.

Seventy papers from twenty three countries were selected from more than 120 abstracts for oral presentation at the conference. Since there are no parallel sessions, the conference program included three full days of paper sessions. The papers were presented in twelve sessions at the Auditorium of Obuda University.

Each speaker had fifteen minutes for the presentation - enough time to highlight the key contributions and ideas of the paper. The end of each session included discussions of the presented papers.
During the coffee and lunch breaks the participants in the conference had a chance to visit the exhibition booths and discuss with more than twenty leading suppliers the latest protection, automation and control devices and tools.

The conference Gala Dinner was held at the unique Gellert Spa, located in the Buda side of Budapest. It started with water ballet, followed by the dinner and the awards ceremony for the photo contest. The excellent food and entertainment created a nice atmosphere for the participants to enjoy themselves, make new friends and have fun.
The conference was followed by a technical tour that took place Friday morning at the 750 kV substation Albertirsa located about 50 km from Budapest. The substation is at one end of a 750 kV line between Hungary and Ukraine.
Today it is the only 750 kV power line in Hungary and one of the few power lines operated with this voltage in the European Union. The substation was energized in 1979 and its protection and control system is like a museum - with electromechanical, solid state and numerical relays, combining hardwiring and IEC 61850 communications.

The conference was attended by more than two hundred protection, automation and control specialists from 38 countries and all continents.
The PAC World 2013 conference will be held in Dublin, Ireland 24-28 June 2013.
