IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Power System Relaying and Control (PSRC) Committee

Our September PSRC meeting took place in Richmond, VA during the week of September 8, 2025, with a successful turnout of 238 participants!   

The PSRC is in sync with the PES strategic direction, to be the leading provider of the latest technological development in the power and energy industry for the betterment of humanity. Core competencies include education, standards, publications and conferences.

Officers include Gene Henneberg, Chair; Jim Niemira, Vice Chair; Gary Kobet, Secretary. Erin Jessup, Standards Coordinator.  There are currently 119 voting members of PSRC, as of 9/1/2025.

PSRC Membership: We participated in the IEEE Virtual Career Fair (USA): Connecting Students and Young Professionals with Industry, on October 30, 2025.

IEEE PES PSRC Awards: The most recent PSRC awards ceremony was held Monday, September 8, 2025, in Richmond, VA. Individual awards include Michael Thompson – Distinguished Service Award; Adi Mulawarman – Certificate of Appreciation; Aaron Martin – Certificate of Appreciation.  Outstanding Standards awards include IEEE Guide for the Protection of Shunt Reactors, with award going to contributors Kamal Garg, Pratap Mysore, and Iliah Voloh.  The IEEE PSRC Young Professional Award was presented to Chase Lockhart, in recognition of outstanding contributions and dedication to the advancement of the power system relaying and control community.

Reminder for Standards Working Group awards and certificates of appreciation:  Once your working group has completed its work, please contact Andrew Uribe andre.uribe@ieee.org for the process to request awards and certificates.  

Technical Paper Coordinator Report:   Conferences for which PSRC members can submit abstracts and possibly present technical papers include the following:

  • 2026 IEEE PES T&D Conference and Expo, May 4-7, 2026, Chicago, IL with the theme “Powering Reliability, Engineering Resilience.”  Call for Tutorials, papers and panel sessions have all closed.  PSRC has 18 conference papers submitted, along with nine panel sessions proposed and 14 panel papers
  • 2026 IEEE PES General Meeting, July 19-23, 2026, Montreal, QC, Canada – Powering the Digital Era is the theme.  Preferred topics for tutorials include Applications of AI in the power and energy industry, Resources for large data centers, designing the grid for the digital world and resiliency of the power grid.  Call for papers is underway

Standard Coordinator’s Report by Erin Jessup.  Please refer to the Main committee meeting minutes for specific projects and status.  There are currently 75 PSRC Standards related projects.  PSRC is partnering with nine different organizations within IEEE and others like IEC.

PSRC Subcommittee Updates:  All of PSRC’s Subcommittees, H, I, J, K, C, D, are diligently working on numerous Standards, Guides, technical papers, tutorials, webinars, etc. for our industry.  Subcommittee chairs Hugo Monterrubio (H), Angelo Tempone (I), Will English (J), Brandon Davies (K), Michael Higginson C), and Meyer Kao, (D). In addition, Ben Kazimier and Mat Garver, PSRC B11 Chair and Vice-Chair, respectively, are working on IEEE SC21 and P1547/.X.    and Kamal Garg and Mahish Patel are coordinating Inverter Based Resource activities.

Biography:

Catherine Dalton is a Strategic Account Executive at EPRI. She has broad experience in the electric utility industry. She is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and an active participant in IEEE PES PSRC. She has a master’s degree in electrical engineering (Ohio State University,) and a MBA from the University of Dayton. Previously she worked for American Electric Power, Basler Electric, SEL and Beckwith Electric.
