Increasing Substation Timing Holdover Accuracy

Meinberg is introducing a Rubidium Oscillator line card for its IMS series time servers. With digital substations requiring a 1µs time synchronization accuracy to UTC for merging units, clocks with the best available oven-controlled crystal oscillator (OCXO) will provide typically two hours of adequate holdover in a 1U form factor. This Rb oscillator can complement 1 or 2 OCXOs in a M1000 1U modular chassis to provide 1.5µs maximum drift over 24 hours in a 1U form factor unit, providing ample time to correct a situation if GNSS is lost due to antenna failure. When used in combination with 1 or 2 GNSS multi-constellation, multi-band receivers with cryptographic authentication and the option for PTP synchronization, it complements an already robust solution for jamming/spoofing resilience in a 1U unit.
