19th DPSP Europe 2025

The 19th International Conference on Developments in Power System Protection (DPSP Europe 2025) was held in Bilbao, Spain, from April 1 to 3, 2025. It brought together global experts to discuss advancements in protection, automation, and control technologies for modern power systems.
The event opened with keynotes on the integration of optical sensors with IEDs and the evolving role of telecommunications in grid protection. Technical sessions explored a wide range of topics, including the protection challenges associated with integrating large-scale renewable energy projects, evolving approaches to relay testing using digital twins, and advancements in wind power plant protection, generator and transformer protection, and distribution systems. The inclusion of artificial intelligence and machine learning in protection schemes was critically discussed, with several sessions dedicated to practical applications and conceptual debates about AI’s role in the sector.
Panel discussions addressed the implementation of IEC 61850 in virtualized environments and the future direction of AI in power system protection. The conference also featured case studies, field experiences, and presentations on innovative testing methodologies, such as virtual FAT using OEM-developed digital twins.
Networking events, poster sessions, and a closing technical visit to the Iberdrola Global Smart Grids Innovation Hub completed the program, offering attendees a well-rounded opportunity to exchange knowledge, explore collaboration, and envision the future of grid protection and control in a rapidly changing electrical power industry.
