7th Annual Canada Protection Symposium

The 7th annual Canadian protection symposium was held at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Toronto, Canada, 6-8 December 2022. 

The opening of the event was followed by a keynote presentation from Rizwan Shah, U.S. Department of Energy.

It covered emerging and new protection, automation, and control technologies in the electric power industry presented by industry expert speakers, as well as from utility engineers sharing best practices and case studies.

The first day of the symposium included two half day tutorials:

  • IEC 61850 LAN Design & Testing
  • Transformer Protection Testing

The main topics of the technical agenda included:

  • Protection, Automation, Control
  • IEC 61850, Digital Substations
  • New Developments in Testing Methods
  • Lessons Learned, Utility Case Studies
  • DER, Microgrids, and Energy Storage
  • Data Science and AI

During the coffee breaks and the lunch break the participants visited the different manufacturers demonstrating their latest equipment in the exhibition area and discussed its characteristics and applications.

The second day of the symposium also included a panel discussion on “Decarbonization and Grid Modernization” which allowed the participants to have a lively discussion on this topic of interest with top level industry experts.

The day ended with a reception, allowing the participants to relax in a nice environment and enjoy spending time with old friends and making new ones.
