EPR Modernizes the SIEPAC Transmission System

The SIEPAC transmission system serves six of the seven countries in Central America, spanning 1,800 kilometers from Guatemala to Panama. One utility, called Empresa Propietaria de la Red (EPR), manages it all. Due to the multinational expanse of the SIEPAC line, EPR faces unique challenges with system maintenance and device access. To improve system visibility and strengthen secure remote access to critical devices, EPR embarked on an ambitious modernization project alongside Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (SEL) and is leveraging advanced wide-area communications, traveling-wave fault locating, and other technology to better serve their customers.
