Canadian Protection Symposium – Virtual Event

The 6th AnnualCanadian Protection Symposium was originally scheduled to take place in Toronto, Canada in December 2021. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic it had to be converted to a live virtual two-day event which took place 30 November – 2 December 2021.

The conference was preceded by two optional half-day pre-conference tutorials on 30 November 2021. Participants could choose between the digital substation cybersecurity tutorial or the system-based testing tutorial or attend both of them.

The conference was opened with a keynote presentation by Dr. Jessica Bian, IEEE PES President.

The symposium program included presentations and discussions on a broad range of topics, such as grid modernization, developments in protection, automation, control technologies, digital substations, IEC 61850, communications and cyber security, lessons learned through utility case studies, etc.

The paper sessions were followed by discussions based on questions related to the presented papers and posted by attendees.

Since conferences are not only a place for specialists to share their experiences and present new ideas, but also for people to meet old friends and make new ones, it was clear that a virtual event is not the same as an in-person symposium. So hopefully in 2022 we will meet face to face in Toronto.
