News from CIGRE Study Committee B5 Protection and Automation
The CIGRE 2024 Paris Session will soon take place from 25 – to 30 August and takes place between the Paris Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games, which will take place from 28 August to 8 September 2024 (3-day overlap). Between 4000 – 4500 delegates are now expected.
SC B5 will host two preferential subjects as follows:
- PS1: Practical experiences and new developments of Process bus:
- Special Reporter – René Troost (NL)
- PS2:Acceptance, Commissioning, and Field Testing for Protection, Automation and Control Systems:
- Special Reporter – Pablo Humeres Flores (BR)
The full papers have now been reviewed and the Special Report has been prepared and summarises the papers and raises questions for response at the session by way of contributions submitted ahead of the sessions.
PS1 and PS2 will be presented on Tuesday 27th August with a poster session the day before. SC B5 will also host a tutorial on the morning of Wednesday 28th August titled “Protection of the power system with high penetration of Renewable Energy Sources”.
The following WG is awaiting approval of its ToR and will hopefully be able to start work soon:
- WG B5.86 – PACS interfaced asset management and condition monitoring using innovative technologies
- SC B5 will also participate in the following joint WG which is about to start work:
- JWG C2/B5.46 – System Integrity Protection Schemes and the (N-1) criteria
The following two WGs have finalized their draft Technical Brochures, and these have been circulated for review ahead of publishing, which is hoped to be before the end of the year.
- WG B5.65 – Enhancing protections system performance by optimizing the response of inverter based source
- WG B5.69 – Experience gained and Recommendations for Implementation of Process Bus in Protection, Automation and Control
At least one other WG is also nearing completion and its final draft report is expected within the next couple of months.
Biography:
Richard Adams is Team Leader – Engineering with PSC in UK. He has a degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, is a Fellow of The Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET) and a member of the organizing committee for the IET DPSP (Developments in Power System Protection) conference. He is currently Secretary for CIGRE Study Committee B5, having been involved in CIGRE since 2003, initially as UK Regular Member, then later as a member of the Strategic Advisory Group. In 2020 he was awarded the CIGRE Distinguished Member award. Richard is married with three children and likes to get out walking if there’s time.
