The event took place 2-5 February 2026 in
San Diego, CA, USA. DistribuTECH 2026, held at the San Diego Convention Center, marked a significant pivot for the utility industry, transitioning from artificial intelligence (AI) experimentation to large-scale execution. Hosted by San Diego Gas & Electric with Itron as the presenting sponsor, the event drew over 18,000–20,000 professionals and 700 exhibitors to address the dual challenges of historic load growth and climate resilience.
The primary theme was “proactive intelligence.” Reporting highlighted a shift from traditional reactive grid management to predictive models. Utilities like SDG&E showcased how machine learning and digital twins now enable “predictive grid operations,” allowing operators to anticipate outages and equipment failures before they occur.

This trend was underscored by the “DTECH Data Centers & AI” track, which explored the unprecedented demand surge driven by hyperscale computing and reindustrialization.
AI governance also emerged as a critical maturity marker. Industry leaders emphasized that data foundations and standardized governance – rather than just model sophistication are now the primary barriers to scaling AI. Major announcements included a “historic” $26.5 billion DOE loan package to Southern Company for grid upgrades and the integration of “Agentic AI” for managing major weather events.
Sustainability and security remained foundational, with sessions focusing on “Autonomous Vegetation Management” for wildfire mitigation, cybersecurity for IT/OT convergence, and the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs). Through keynotes featuring leaders from Zipline and SpaceX, the event signaled a sector increasingly borrowing from high-tech industries to build a faster, more automated, and resilient energy future.
