Artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications in the electric power systems protection and control is becoming a very hot topic due to the potential impact that it may have on our industry. However, this new technology is not something that protection and control specialists are very familiar with. That is why it is important to look at what AI is and how it impacts the operation of the power grid.

Mike L’s book “The AI Energy Equation: Transforming Power Utilities with Artificial Intelligence” looks into the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize the electric power industry. The book explores how AI can optimize grids, improve efficiency, and pave the way for a more sustainable energy future.

The author of the book is a highly accomplished and renowned instructor and author specializing in the fields of energy and environmental studies. With a multidisciplinary approach, he seamlessly blends technical expertise with social, economic, and policy aspects of the energy field. The more than 300 pages book is organized in 17 chapters making a compelling case for AI as a game-changer for power grids. Traditional grids were designed for one-way power flow, from centralized plants to consumers. The rapid penetration of renewable energy sources like solar and wind, however, requires a more dynamic and intelligent grid. AI can play a crucial role in demand forecasting by analyzing historical data and weather patterns. It can predict fluctuations in energy demand with greater accuracy. This allows utilities to optimize generation and distribution, reducing reliance on expensive peak power plants.

It can improve distributed energy resources management considering an increasing number of homes and businesses equipped with solar panels and battery storage. AI can manage these distributed resources effectively. This can integrate renewable energy seamlessly into the grid and stabilize power flows. AI can analyze sensor data from transformers, power lines, and other grid equipment to predict potential failures. This enables proactive maintenance, preventing outages and improving grid reliability.

The book provides clear examples of how AI is already being implemented in these areas. Case studies demonstrate how utilities are using AI to optimize renewable energy integration, reduce costs, and improve customer satisfaction. Mike L goes beyond just highlighting AI’s efficiency benefits. He explores how AI can facilitate the transition to a more sustainable energy future. AI-powered microgrids can be created, allowing communities to generate and manage their own power, reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Additionally, AI can play a role in integrating electric vehicles (EVs) into the grid. By predicting charging patterns and optimizing grid loads, AI can ensure a smooth transition to a future dominated by EVs.

The book also acknowledges potential challenges associated with AI adoption in the power sector. Issues like data security, regulatory hurdles, and the need for workforce retraining are addressed. L proposes solutions and emphasizes the importance of collaboration between utilities, technology companies, and policymakers to overcome these challenges.

While “The AI Energy Equation” paints a promising picture of AI’s transformative potential, a few critical aspects warrant further discussion. The book could further analyze the potential biases that might be embedded in AI algorithms used for decision-making within the power grid. Furthermore, the ethical implications of AI-driven automation in the workforce deserve more exploration. While AI can improve efficiency, job displacement in the utility sector is a real concern that needs to be addressed proactively.

And one thing I found amazing was that in this book there was not a single diagram or formula.

Overall, “The AI Energy Equation” is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the future of the power industry. It provides a clear overview of how AI can revolutionize how we generate, distribute, and consume energy. The book offers a compelling vision for a more sustainable and efficient energy future powered by artificial intelligence. However, it would benefit from a more nuanced discussion of the potential challenges and ethical considerations surrounding AI adoption in this critical sector.
