8th Annual Canada Protection Symposium

The event was held at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Toronto, Canada, 5-7 December 2023.  

It covered emerging and new protection, automation and control technologies in the electric power industry presented by industry expert speakers, as well as from utility engineers sharing best practices and case studies.

The first day of the symposium included two half day tutorials:

  • Field Testing Distribution Automation Schemes
  • Process Bus in the Digital Substation

The symposium opening was followed by a Keynote presentation from Dr. Lora Field, Ontario Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade.

The main topics of the technical agenda included:

  • Protection, Automation, Control
  • IEC 61850, Digital Substations
  • New Developments in Testing
  • Methods Studies
  • DER, Microgrids, and Energy Storage
  • Data Science and AI

The first day of the symposium also included a panel discussion on “Steps toward successful energy storage implementation: from design and engineering towards comprehensive performance testing” which allowed the participants to have a lively discussion on this topic of interest with top level industry experts.

During the coffee and the lunch breaks the participants visited the manufacturers demonstrating their latest equipment in the exhibition area and discussed its applications.
