OpenSCD (Open Substation Communication Designer) is an Open-Source software for creating and editing SCL (System Configuration Language) files used in IEC 61850 system engineering process. It aims to simplify the process of designing and configuring Digital Substations by providing a user-oriented feature set.
OpenSCD is a web application, eliminating the need for installation or complex setup procedures. This makes it highly accessible and platform independent. The tool offers a graphical interface for editing SCL files, making it easier to understand and manipulate complex substation configurations.
Coming from the need to enhance incomplete SCD files, especially adding the substation section information, OpenSCD has evolved in an always more encompassing tool for the communication configuration of IEC 61850 systems.
Any interested and party may extend and customize the functionality of OpenSCD. As an Open-Source project, any stakeholder from the OpenSCD community can contribute to the feature set. The next and most important feature is the one that somebody decides to work on.
Common core functionality and already existing feature code serve as a launchpad to a rapid implementation of customized engineering workflows.
Connecting the IEC 61850 engineering with utility definitions and templates unleashes the potential of automated system configuration, thus making the implementation of Digital Substations more efficient.
